Surgical Evaluation of Lung Cancer

Abstract
The records of 29 cases with a confirmed diagnosis of lung cancer who underwent surgical therapy at Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery of the Chonnam National University Hospital were analyzed clinically from August, 1983 to October, 1987.
The peak incidence were observed in the sixth decade of life. Male versus female ratio was 3.5: 1.
Preoperative diagnostic procedures were simple chest X ray and bronchscopic biopsy, sputum cytology, bronchogram and computerized tomography. 26 of total 27 cases revealed the mass lesion with or without other abnormality.
Cough was the most frequent presenting symptom (52 %) and chest pain and discomfort was next common (41%).
There were 17(59%) of squamous cell carcinoma, 10% of adenocarcinoma, 7% of small cell carcinoma.
They received 11 lobotomy, 7 pneumonectomy and 1 wedge resection with 65% respectability.
We were observed more higher stage postoperatively than preoperative TNM stage especially in the respectable cases (stage I , II , III A).
